The Life Science Sector at Uppsala Region in Brief
The overall goal of Uppsala BIO is to contribute to Upsala’s vision of 70,000 new jobs in 2050. Of these, at least 3500 jobs will be created in the life science sector.
Uppsala BIO’s follow-up shows that industrial development in Uppsala continues with about one hundred new jobs a year. These jobs, in turn, generate many more new jobs through multiplier effects, in the form of supporting companies within, for example, IT, hardware and law also establishing themselves and growing in Uppsala.
In the region, there are many prosperous and profitable life science companies. It is particularly gratifying that medium-sized companies with 10-100 employees continue to grow. Together with the universities, hospitals and national authorities in the region, there is an infrastructure that can attract other companies to Uppsala.
In Uppsala, there are currently more than 100 life science companies with at least two employees, and / or who have a turnover of at least SEK 1 million per year. In 2017, there were approximately 5,000 employees in these companies which had a combined turnover of approximately SEK 28 billion. Most of their goods and services are exported, which means that they account for a large proportion of the total export value in Uppsala.
About half of the employees in the life science industry in Uppsala, about 2 300 people, work in Uppsala Business Park. 25%, about 1 200 people, work at GE Healthcare Bio-Sciences in Bolanderna. The remaining workforce is located in Uppsala Science Park, Green Innovation Park and the rest of the city.
Uppsala presents a broad palette of several companies within the medical technology sector, biotech and diagnostics, and also in the pharmaceutical sector with associated CRO services, etc., Uppsala is particularly strong. Many companies also have a mix of functions, such as marketing and sales, R&D and production located here, which strengthens the connection to the region.

Uppsala BIO has an important role to connect and contribute to the overall growth of Life Sciences, nationally and internationally, both for academic institutions and companies.
Since the beginning of Testa Center, Uppsala BIOs team has as an external project coordinator role and has developed the application and selection process based on the BIO-X methodology.
